*Students that wish to intern with UNA-USA, Columbus Chapter must be members of UNA-USA and our OSU Student Alliance. Professor Ida Mirzaie (at-large board member, UNACOL) is the Faculty Advisor and Stephanie Kline (at-large board member, UNACOL) is President of the Student Alliance.

  • Joining UNA-USA can be done via the website www.unausa.org and is free to students.
  • Please contact President Stephanie Kline stephbeth.k@gmail.com to join the OSU Student Alliance.

These memberships are required because Student Alliance members not only work closely with the UNA-USA Columbus Chapter but are also invited to participate in the following programs and training sessions offered by UNA-USA headquarters in New York City where they are also given the opportunity to network with UN dignitaries & government representatives :
  • UNA-USA Members' Day at UN Headquarters
  • the Biennial UNA-USA National Convention
  • the Council of Chapters and Divisions Annual Meeting,
  • and UNA-USA's most important advocacy event of the year – UNA-USA Day on Capitol Hill.

More specific information on these events can be found on UNA-USA’s website www.unausa.org.

Internship Programs:

Advocacy: Students in this internship program will meet with OSU Political Science Professor Dr. Chad Alger (Vice President, Advocacy, UNACOL) on campus once a week to learn about the present UN system, its historic roots and future potential, and evaluate the quality of participation of the government of the United States throughout the some fifty organizations in the UN system. Once knowledge is gained, students meet once per week to discuss current world issues and UN advocacy issues in order to engage in letter writing/advocacy campaigns which will include writing articles and/or editorials for print in local magazines, online publications, and our website. Top UNA advocacy issues can be found on UNA-USA’s website: www.unausa.org and include strengthening the U.S.-UN relationship, advancing human rights and international justice, renewing the united nations, building international consensus on climate change, achieving the Millennium Development Goals, promoting arms control and disarmament.

Model United Nations: In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization's agenda. Students make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the conference rules of procedure - all in the interest of mobilizing "international cooperation" to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world. More information can be found on UNA-USA’s website: www.unausa.org. Students will work for up to 12 or more hours a week (depending on the activities) with Len Baldwin, (Director of Model UN Activities, UNACOL), as well as local participating Model UN teachers and high school students, and be involved in the following Model UN activities: Assist Model UN teachers with developing Global Studies/Model UN, engage Model UN students in committee simulations, attend conferences be a support team for students, create topic forums, and create a Central Ohio Model UN Conference.

Columbus Chapter Involvement:

Programs: Advocacy and Model UN interns are both welcome and encouraged to participate in UNA-USA Columbus Chapter Educational Programs and events. Some programs include (but are not limited to) United Nations Day, World Refugee Day, and Columbus International Festival. Interns will assist in promoting chapter programs and events by contacting other student and community organizations and inviting them to participate, as well relaying information about the event and our organization, UNA-USA. Ashley Roll, (Vice President, Programs and Internship Coordinator UNACOL) will oversee these duties.

*Students will be directed, counseled, and evaluated by their respective program advisors.
